Since 2016 particular diet has been trending and recently has become more popular due to certain celebrities such as Adele using it to lose tremendous amount of weight.
In this little post we will take a deep dive into what the Sirtfood diet truly is, why it works, and whether it’s a valid choice for you.
The Idea Behind The Sirtfood Diet
First of all let’s begin by looking at the base of the diet, which relies on the idea of sirtuins having a tremendous effect on the body.
Sirtuins are a family of proteins that help regulate and maintain cell health. Essentially, they focus on maintaining cellular balance, and the scientific world also known as homoeostasis. These kinds of proteins have been fairly popular recently due to the expanding research into this area, more specifically relating to anti ageing.
There is a caveat though, and that is that sirtuins don’t function on their own and therefore an increase in sirtuins won’t necessarily have a beneficial impact on the cells from a sirtuin perspective. There are other parts of the puzzle that would also need to increase for them to have the effect touted in the diet.
That’s not to say that these foods and healthy. Let’s face most of us know that fruit, the Mediterranean diet and that dark chocolate are healthy. So if you’re following a pretty healthy diet the question then becomes:
“Does only having particular foods improve your life and your weight loss.”
Many of these foods people already consume without giving them a special name. These are the top 20 foods in the list.
- Red wine
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Dark chocolate (85% cocoa)
- Matcha green tea
- Arugula (rocket)
- Bird’s eye chili
- Medjool dates
- Red chicory
The Diet Plan
Many people use this diet for weight loss, so that’s the aspect we will focus on. You are likely reading this for that reason too and that’s what interests me the most in this diet. More importantly I want you to understand why this does or does not work for you.
In the initial three days of the diet you are meant to consume 1000 cal a day. If you’ve never counted calories here’s an image of a comparison of 200 calories across various foods.
For the majority of the population this is a real struggle, and as someone who has tried a variety of different health diets just for fun, I can tell you that 1000 cal a day is not easy, it’s especially difficult if you’re a man (because your calorie requirements will probably be higher).
The other things thing that happens is that and it will likely impact your sleep quality. Have you ever tried going to bed hungry?
Of these 1000 calories a large percentage comes from shakes that you make yourself with a final meal being a home-cooked meal based on the Sirtfood list. Fortunately for the diet, this is not the end. If it were, then I wouldn’t even have taken the time to write a post about it. Personally, I think diets based around shakes are destined to fail. So, at least this isn’t a permanent part of the diet.
As you know weight loss is down to calorie control, so if you consuming 1000 cal a day you will inevitably lose weight, in fact I could give you 1000 cal cake diet and he would probably lose weight. Obviously, from a nutritional perspective they aren’t the same but from a weight loss perspective they pretty much are.
After the thousand calorie period you enter a 1500 cal period. This period last three days and consists of two shakes and two meals a day. Again, most people will lose weight consuming 1500 cal a day so no surprise there. A bonus is that the food is quite nutrient rich, so that’s a plus I suppose.
During the next two weeks you have what is known as the maintenance phase. During this phase you have sirtfood rich meals a day and one shake. Although I believe that during this phase calorie control isn’t paid attention to directly, if you look at the food list you don’t have to be a genius to realise that meal is made from those ingredients will result in a low calorie intake.
Again, we are left with a way to control calories without necessarily being aware of this. This means that most people will lose weight, because most people eat more than three times a day when they eat “normally” the foods are quite calorie dense.
This is a bonus that’s worth noting, as previously mentioned, the focus on is what are already known as “healthy” foods.
Is The Sirtfood Diet For You
Here’s the thing, inevitably if you follow this diet you will lose weight. So sure, there is value in that. However, if you’re short don’t have much much muscle mass and aren’t physically active then you may not lose weight on this diet because you may not be controlling calories accurately.
The more important question here is can you maintain the weight loss once you’ve achieved it. Unless you have your shopping done for you and a chef making the food for you I highly doubt that most people will be able to maintain that weight loss.
The reason for this being that people like to eat much more than what they are offered in this diet. The problem with most other diets is the same one that can be found in this one. That is, that the effect of weight loss is sold as being an account of the diet rather than just calorie restriction. In other words, if you ever plan on being social again, maintaining your weight loss or having more exciting meals with your friends and family and having a little bit more nutritional freedom in your life then this probably isn’t for you. You’re better off just doing what works:
Eating sufficient protein
Learning to balance it around your life
Make sure most of your food is healthy
If on the other hand you think that you can follow an extremely restrictive diet for the rest of your life until the day you die and will never go off track then by all means give this ago. It’s a no from me but I won’t stop anyone from trying it.
The major plus of this diet are that the foods are nutritionally dense. If you want the benefits without the restrictions, have some of the foods from the list.
